Your vehicle's clutch should always remain in top condition, but over time you might find it needs replacing. When this is the case, choose a high-quality clutch kit available the moment you switch on your vehicle, your clutch is put into action. Helping you to smoothly change gears and offering a boost of power to your vehicle, it's important that it's always working as it should. If you notice something isn't right, it might be time for a replacement. When you need a new clutch, a clutch kit will ensure you have everything you need.

A spinning disc of heavy steel (or carbon fibre in some newer models), the flywheel stores rotational energy when your vehicle is at a stop. If your gears sometimes slip a malfunctioning flywheel is probably to blame. The flywheel is the interface between the clutch system and the engine. When your foot is off the clutch pedal, the clutch disc presses against the flywheel, locking the engine to the transmission. When you apply pressure to the clutch pedal the flywheel is released, disengaging the transmission from the engine. It is the amount of friction between the flywheel and the clutch plate that determines how much energy the clutch can hold. If the surface of the flywheel is damaged by cracks or grooves, or if it accumulates a build-up of oil, it will not be able to produce enough friction when it spins against the clutch disc, this can cause the gears to slip, which is serious safety risk for your vehicle engine.

Common signs that you might need a new clutch:

  1. Judder
  2. Slip
  3. Drag
  4. Fierceness

Symptoms: Engine accelerates without giving a corresponding increase in vehicle speed, burning smell, vehicle will not drive up steep hills.
Cause: Incorrect clutch adjustments, partial seizure of linkage or fouling of pedal preventing the full return of the linkage, worn clutch facings, oil contaminated facings, defective pressure plate and/or broken springs, partially seized mechanism.

Symptoms: Difficulty in engaging first gear from neutral without making noise, jolt when changing gear with the vehicle in motion, vehicle moves when pedal is fully depressed.
Cause: Incorrect clutch adjustments or lack of fluid in the hydraulic operating system, worn hydraulic system, oil contaminated facings, defective driven plate, buckled plate or seizure on spines, seized spigot bearing or worn spigot.

Symptoms: A sudden move of the vehicle though the pedal is being gradually released.
Cause: Partial seizure of linkage or fouling of pedal preventing the full return of the linkage, uneven operation of the clutch arm, worn hydraulic system, oil contaminated driven plate, misalignment of engine to gearbox, worn spigot bearing.

Common signs that you might need a new clutch fitted to your vehicle include:

  1. Changing gear is difficult
  2. Rattling or grinding sound when you change gears
  3. You can rev the engine, but your vehicle barely increases in speed
  4. Engine revs climb or fall seemingly at random
  5. The clutch may seem to 'slip' causing a loss of acceleration, or a complete loss of drive

The clutch is a solid metal disc located between the engine and the transmission, it couples the crank shaft and flywheel to the gearbox's clutch shaft. The clutch enables the drive from the engine to be disconnected momentarily from the gearbox.

The clutch disc is simply put a friction disc that, when engaged, presses against the flywheel (which is directly connected to the crankshaft) by way of the pressure plate. If disengaged the clutch disc does not press against the flywheel, which in turn means that no drive is transferred to the gearbox, allowing for a gear change to be made.
